Red Light Special

NC State ended the summer football camps with a bang by landing four commitments on Saturday and another three today. Here is a look back at how the last 72 hours have unfolded for the Wolfpack on the recruiting trail.

It all began early in Saturday morning.

The final camp session consisted of offensive line and defensive line prospects working out, but it would be a punter who "lit up the red light" for the Wolfpack.

Woodward Academy (GA) punter A.J. Cole, who had earned an offer from NC State after performing at camp on Monday, called the coaches at 9:00 a.m. to give his verbal commitment.

A.J. Cole

"I talked it over with my family, and I called coach Faulkner, the special teams coach, [Friday] night and told him I wanted to talk with coach Doeren," said Cole. "I called coach Doeren this morning at 9:00 and told him I wanted to commit.

"All of the coaches were excited about it. They were all in the room and I talked to three of them. That made me feel even better about my decision."

Cole, who also starts at tight end and defensive end for Woodward Academy, is rated the No. 3 punter in the country by Kohl's Kicking. The top two punters are committed to Virginia and Alabama respectively.

"I'm excited about it," Cole said of his decision. "It's incredible. Being able to punt at a school like NC State is something I've always wanted to do.

"I love the coaches and the school."

Cole just started the day off right for the Wolfpack coaches. After a couple of hours at camp the session broke for lunch, and around 12:20 pm NC State landed commitment No. 2 of the day: Southern (NC) Durham wide receiver Maurice Trowell.

Maurice Trowell

The 6-foot, 180-pounder earned an offer from the Wolfpack Friday evening after a strong performance at camp. He held offers from Elon, ECU, App. State, Ball State, Campbell, Charlotte, Hampton, Old Dominion and Towson, but it took him less than 24 hours to jump on NC State's offer.

Trowell finished his junior season with 48 receptions for 948 yards and 15 touchdowns. He was also a first-team all-conference selection, and Scout.com Recruiting Analyst Michael Clark believes he is very underrated.

"Trowell is a wide receiver that did not get enough attention from college coaching staffs," said Clark. "The playmaker runs good routes and has soft hands. He has knack for getting open and is very good after the catch. Trowell will go across the middle and make the tough catch, but also has the ability to beat defenses downfield.

"Look for him to get on the field early in his career in Raleigh and ultimately become a major weapon in N.C. State's offense.

Leading Saturday's camp was offensive line coach Mike Uremovich and defensive line coach Ryan Nielsen, so the majority of the other coaches were at the Murphy Center hosting recruits and taking them on tours of the campus. One of those recruits was Charlotte (NC) Mallard Creek athlete Jaylen Samuels, who accepted a Wolfpack offer at 3:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

"The coaches were all happy," said Samuels. "They all started clapping when I told them. I was being recruited by Eddie Faulkner. He's a great guy. I feel like I can trust him.

"I talked about it with my parents, and we just went ahead and did it. I thought it was the best fit for me. I love the atmosphere and the environment, and the coaches are all real cool."

Like Trowell, Samuels picked up an offer from NC State after attending a camp session. The 6-foot, 225-pounder runs consistently in the 4.5 range and excelled at multiple positions for Mallard Creek.

Jaylen Samuels

"I played all over the field," Samuels stated. "NC State's recruiting me to play fullback or h-back though. They want me to stay on offense."

An explosive threat in the passing game, Samuels totaled 45 catches for 1,021 yards and 12 touchdowns during his junior season, averaging a stellar 23 yards per catch.

"I'll be used all over the field again this year," said Samuels. "I'm going to play some outside linebacker and running back or slot. I'm the quarterback in the Wildcat."

"Samuels is one of the most underrated prospects in North Carolina," said Clark. "He is somewhat of a tweener prospect at 6-foot, 225 pounds, but is extremely versatile. In high school, he has lined up at every offensive skill position except quarterback. He is a strong, physical football player.

"Samuels is an effective runner, receiver and blocker. Although he was not as heavily recruited, look for him to become a valuable contributor to the Wolfpack's offense down the road."

Any staff would be thrilled to land three commitments in one day, but the Wolfpack wasn't finished. Still on campus was Carrollton (GA) standout tight end Cole Cook, who arrived at NC State at 2:00 in the afternoon for his unofficial visit.

Cook was an underrated, unranked recruit back in late February when he was named the top overall performer at the Valdosta MVP Camp, an event that included prospects who would later pick Georgia Tech and Georgia among others.

Two days later he would earn his first offer... from NC State. Programs like Missouri, Mississippi State, Florida State, Boston College, Maryland, Illinois, and Cincinnati would also ofer, but the Pack made the first impression.

"NC State was my first offer," Cook told Pack Pride this week. "That still means a lot to me, even now. There were a lot of schools that had interest in me at the time, but they hadn't pulled the trigger before NC State did in February."

Cole Cook

Cook had indicated that NC State and Mississippi State were his top two schools, so the Wolfpack coaches had to feel good about having the out-of-state prospect on campus, where they sealed the day late Saturday evening.

"I'm really happy and excited to commit today," said Cook. "NC State has done a great job recruiting me. I love the coaching staff and the academics there. I really feel like we can win championships. I'm very proud to be a part of the Pack14."

Rated the No. 27 tight end in the country by FOX Sports, the 6-foot-4, 235-pounder has a lot of ability.

"Cook is going to play hard at all times," said FOX Sports National Recruiting Analyst Chad Simmons. "He is very unselfish, he is willing to block often, and he is quite good at that. He can really seal the edge, he can use his long arms to keep DEs/OLBs off his body, and he is very tough in the trenches.

"He specializes in blocking due to the offense he plays in at Carrollton, but he can catch MUCH better than people think. He has very strong hands, he is a natural receiver of the ball, he can catch the ball in traffic, and he is a better than average route runner. That is an area he will really improve on a lot though down the road."

Cook's commitment ended a special day for NC State. Four verbal commitments in a 10-hour period... as NC State recruiting coordinator Ryan Nielsen tweeted shortly after Cook's decision:

However, NC State wasn't finished. Sunday was quiet on the recruiting front, but the "red light" was back on shortly before noon in Raleigh.

The Wolfpack landed a huge commitment when 6-foot-3, 260-pound defensive lineman Justin Jones called the coaches with his decision.

Justin Jones

"When I got down on the field, that really sold me," Jones said of his recent visit to NC State. "I was talking to coach Sutton and he was just telling me about the feeling during game day and then putting that jersey on.

"It was a great feeling. When I took my brother on the field, that sold me right there."

Jones, who is rated a three-star prospect and the No. 42 defensive tackle in the nation by Scout.com, made a name for himself this spring with a standout performance at the Nike Football Training Camp in Buford, Georgia.

"Justin Jones of South Cobb High School in Georgia was holding an offer from Old Dominion at one point this Spring," said Scout.com Director of Scouting Scott Kennedy. "His second offer? Miami. That's quite a step up in being noticed by big-time programs.

"He's an excellent, big athlete who could play end in the right system or slide inside and play defensive tackle. He was terrific at the Nike Camp held in Buford."

All the coaches there talked to me about coming to Raleigh and playing right away," said Jones. "Once I get there they think I can help right away."

Literally minutes after Jones announced his decision, another top target popped for the Wolfpack: DeMatha (MD) defensive end Deonte Holden.

The 6-foot-4, 220-pounder is rated a three-star prospect by Scout.com and the No. 37 defensive end in the country.

He was on campus this spring for multiple unofficial visits.

"Holden has come on a lot in the spring as a legit prospect after adding 15 pounds," said Scout.com's Brian Dohn. "He's 6-4, 220 pounds and offers versatility. He changes direction well, and he can play in space. He can play outside linebacker at his size or if he puts on more weight, he can move to defensive end.

"During a 7-on-7 over the weekend, Holden was able to move in space and defend the short pass. He also showed an ability to accelerate quickly. He's a kid that could be a big-time player once his body matures. Give him two years and he can be very good."

"N.C. State is a great school," Holden said. "They want me to live up to the hype of Mario Williams, so hopefully I can do that."

Holden picked NC State over offers from Boston College, Cincinnati, Iowa, Temple, Virginia and Wake Forest among others.

Bradley Chubb

Not even 20 minutes after Holden's announcement, the Wolfpack had another pledge in the fold. Defensive end/outside linebacker Bradley Chubb called the Wolfpack staff to let them know that he wanted to join close friend Justin Jones in Raleigh. The duo took recruiting trips together this spring, and had hoped to play together in college.

"I just prayed on it," said Chubb. "My parents liked it, and I felt like it was the place for me to be.

"When I went on my first visit, they took me on a tour, and I was just blown away by it because on TV, they undersell it so much you would never guess it was this nice. We went to the new library and it was just one of the most amazing things I've ever seen. Everything is just amazing."

At 6-4, 235 pounds Chubb is currently rated a three-star prospect and the No. 46 defensive end in the nation by Scout.com.

He held double-digit offers including pledges from Miss. State, Duke, East Carolina, Georgia Tech, Iowa, Wake Forest, and West Virginia among others.

NC State now has 19 commitments in the 2014 class and, expecting to take a full class, remains firmly in the mix elite prospects like Greenville (NC) Rose defensive end Kentavius Street, Durham (NC) Hillside wideout Trevion Thompson, Decatur (GA) Columbia offensive lineman Terronne Prescod, Winston-Salem (NC) Parkland defensive tackle Deshaywn Middleton, and Norfolk (VA) Lake Taylor wide receiver Jamil Kamara among others.

But for now, they can sit back and celebrate a three-day haul that included prospects who picked the Wolfpack over programs such as Miami, Louisville, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Iowa, and Mississippi State among others.

It all began early in Saturday morning.

The final camp session consisted of offensive line and defensive line prospects working out, but it would be a punter who \"lit up the red light\" for the Wolfpack.

Woodward Academy (GA) punter A.J. Cole, who had earned an offer from NC State after performing at camp on Monday, called the coaches at 9:00 a.m. to give his verbal commitment.

\"I talked it over with my family, and I called coach Faulkner, the special teams coach, [Friday] night and told him I wanted to talk with coach Doeren,\" said Cole. \"I called coach Doeren this morning at 9:00 and told him I wanted to commit.

\"All of the coaches were excited about it. They were all in the room and I talked to three of them. That made me feel even better about my decision.\"

Cole, who also starts at tight end and defensive end for Woodward Academy, is rated the No. 3 punter in the country by Kohl's Kicking. The top two punters are committed to Virginia and Alabama respectively.

\"I'm excited about it,\" Cole said of his decision. \"It's incredible. Being able to punt at a school like NC State is something I've always wanted to do.

\"I love the coaches and the school.\"

Cole just started the day off right for the Wolfpack coaches. After a couple of hours at camp the session broke for lunch, and around 12:20 pm NC State landed commitment No. 2 of the day: Southern (NC) Durham wide receiver Maurice Trowell.

\"Trowell is a wide receiver that did not get enough attention from college coaching staffs,\" said Clark. \"The playmaker runs good routes and has soft hands. He has knack for getting open and is very good after the catch. Trowell will go across the middle and make the tough catch, but also has the ability to beat defenses downfield.

\"Look for him to get on the field early in his career in Raleigh and ultimately become a major weapon in N.C.

\"The coaches were all happy,\" said Samuels. \"They all started clapping when I told them. I was being recruited by Eddie Faulkner. He's a great guy. I feel like I can trust him.

\"I talked about it with my parents, and we just went ahead and did it. I thought it was the best fit for me. I love the atmosphere and the environment, and the coaches are all real cool.\"

Like Trowell, Samuels picked up an offer from NC State after attending a camp session. The 6-foot, 225-pounder runs consistently in the 4.5 range and excelled at multiple positions for Mallard Creek.

\"I played all over the field,\" Samuels stated. \"NC State's recruiting me to play fullback or h-back though. They want me to stay on offense.\"

An explosive threat in the passing game, Samuels totaled 45 catches for 1,021 yards and 12 touchdowns during his junior season, averaging a stellar 23 yards per catch.

\"I'll be used all over the field again this year,\" said Samuels. \"I'm going to play some outside linebacker and running back or slot. I'm the quarterback in the Wildcat.\"

\"Samuels is one of the most underrated prospects in North Carolina,\" said Clark. \"He is somewhat of a tweener prospect at 6-foot, 225 pounds, but is extremely versatile. In high school, he has lined up at every offensive skill position except quarterback. He is a strong, physical football player.

\"Samuels is an effective runner, receiver and blocker. Although he was not as heavily recruited, look for him to become a valuable contributor to the Wolfpack's offense down the road.\"

Any staff would be thrilled to land three commitments in one day, but the Wolfpack wasn't finished. Still on campus was Carrollton (GA) standout tight end Cole Cook, who arrived at NC State at 2:00 in the afternoon for his unofficial visit.
