Three QBs Could Redshirt

NC State head coach Dave Doeren announced last week that the starting quarterback battle had been narrowed down to Pete Thomas and Brandon Mitchell, and today he indicated potentially three other quarterbacks could redshirt this season.

Sophomore Manny Stocker played in five games last year as a true freshman, and he still has a redshirt year available.

"Yes, there's been talk about it," Doeren responded when asked about potentially redshirting Stocker. "I can't rule it out, I want to get through this next scrimmage and see what guys do, but there are three guys potentially that could redshirt between the two true freshmen and Manny."

Stocker and true freshmen Josh Taylor and Bryant Shirreffs are still actively competing for the No. 3 spot.

"There is still a fight between those guys for the third spot," added Doeren.

As for the starter, it seems be a toss-up right now. Senior Brandon Mitchell and junior Pete Thomas remain in a tight battle for the job.

"There hasn't been that three day, 'this is my job,'" said Doeren. "There's been a day where 'he's going to take it' and then the next day the other guy battles.

"They are really competing right now, and I like that. I like the fact that we have competition and options at that position right now."
