Alabama linebacker Torrence Brown (6-4, 230 pounds) favors four schools and one has an advantage over the other three.
Southern Miss is the school to beat for the Tuscaloosa Academy linebacker but just because the Golden Eagles are in good shape now does not mean they are guaranteed to land his signature on the first week in February.
"I haven't really had a chance to visit too many schools yet so I plan on taking some officials. Right now Southern Miss is at the very top but I'm still keeping my options open. It's just that I've visited down there like three times so that's where I feel most at home so far. I'm going to take a couple more visits though."
NC State will get a visit, but probably just one visit. The Pack will need to make that one count.
The good news is Brown already thinks well of the coaches and what he knows of the school.
"I do plan on going to NC State this fall and besides that I really just plan to visit Arizona State. There are about four or five schools I'm really looking at. Those two and Southern Miss and Northern Illinois.
"I really like NC State's coaching staff and from what I hear about them they're a great program. They have a lot of tradition. I really like Arizona State's coaching staff as well. They really, really make me feel wanted."
Brown said it is just a coincidence that NC State and NIU are recruiting him and he did not hear from Dave Doeren or his staff until they took over in Raleigh.
He did say that it would be ideal to stay close to home for college but he is not ruling out other options.
"If a school is far away and that's where my heart is then that's what I'll do," he said.
