The highly touted four-star recruit out of Meriden (N.H.) Kimball Union is headed to North Carolina State to play for Mark Gottfried.
"The opportunity was great for me to go in there and help and help them get back to where they used to be," Abu told Scout.com. "I feel like they are really on the come up. They try to do a lot of good things and I want to be apart of it."
Abu also considered Florida, Connecticut and Providence. He visits all four programs. Abu said his trip to N.C. State stood out.
"N.C. State took me to the biggest Mosque in Raleigh," he said. "That's not something you have to do on an official visit for basketball. The people there were Pack fans. They cared. They wanted to meet me. They wanted me to come. I just felt like I had a whole state behind me."
Abu said he developed strong relationships with Gottfried and North Carolina State assistant coach Orlando Early, who was the lead recruiter.
"He's a real down to earth guy who you can relate to," Abu said about Gottfried. "He's open about everything and any question I ever had."
"He's a cool dude," he added about coach Early. "He's the coolest dude and is completely honestly. He never lied."
Abu is North Carolina State's third verbal pledge of the 2014 class. He joins Caleb and Cody Martin to make up their three-man class.
"I'm really excited," Abu said. "I'm just happy to finally make a decision."
Abu is currently ranked No. 51 overall.
