Pack Pride Q&A: Derrell Scott

Pack Pride talks with Havelock tailback Derrell Scott after his MVP performance in the state finals.

Havelock tailback Derrell Scott closed out his senior season with a remarkable 209 yard, three touchdown rushing effort to lead the Rams to their third straight state title in a 21-13 win over Concord.

Pack Pride caught up with Scott after the game to get his thoughts on the game and the latest on his recruitment.

How does it feel to close out your senior season with another state title?

"It feels great. This is what we work for each and every day. Leading from the spring all the way up until now, this is work what we work for. We talk state championship every day. We work hard. We work towards state championships. We have state championship expectations. Everything we do from conditioning to the way we pay attention to detail, just everything we do- we keep it at a very high level and it shows."

You've consistently mentioned Tennessee, South Carolina and NC State as your top three. Can you talk a little about those schools.

"South Carolina, they've been at the top of my list for a while. Tennessee, they've moved up a little bit in the past few months or so after I took my official (visit) up there. NC State, they've pretty much moved up a little bit, too. With the new coaching staff, coach Doeren and them, they've made some pretty good strong points to me about the NC State home thing and how they have a championship formula."

So is South Carolina on top right now?

"It's pretty much even with those three schools."

Originally you planned to decide on your birthday but ended up delaying your decision. Do you know when you may make a final decision?

"I haven't really set one during the season because I've been focused on my team so I'm going to make one after the season sometime before the next year or like in January but it'll be sometime soon."

What was it like playing in Carter-Finley stadium?

"It was fun. I mean, it's a really nice stadium, and I enjoyed playing in it."

Are you excited about playing in the Shrine Bowl?

"I'm looking forward to it. It will be great."

Tennessee, NC State and South Carolina- are those your final three?

"It's pretty much those three."

Is anyone else besides those three still on you?

"Florida State, Auburn a little bit and that's about it."
What will your decision come down to?

"Probably just come down to the place I feel comfortable. You don't play football every month out of the year so you want a place you'll enjoy living at part of the year."

You and Kentavius Street are friends. Does his commitment to NC State have any impact on your decision?

"I mean, a little bit (does Street's commitment have any impact on him). You want to play with great players where ever you go. You don't want to go somewhere where there's not any great players or you're the only person that's going to be there."

Did he let you know ahead of time where he was going?

"He didn't tell me ahead of time but he told me when he did. I talked to him yesterday. He was just talking about, let's do it together and stuff like that and do it in-state."
