Gottfried: "We Did Not Respond"

RALEIGH, N.C. -- NC State head coach Mark Gottfried met with the media following the loss to Pittsburgh.

"My first thought in a disappointing game, in the second half it was real simple, they out-toughed us."

"They defended us tougher than we defended them."

"They pushed the ball on the break."

"We did not respond."

"Our young guys better learn at this level that if you do that you'll see the results that you saw today. It's real simple to me, we have to be a lot tougher than we were today."

"I think everyone has to step up. They have had opportunities. We have to have better percentages from everyone on the floor."

When we came out and started the second half, it was kind of like a prizefight. In a boxing match when someone punches you a couple of times you better make a decision and respond. We did not respond today to their aggressiveness in the second half."

"How we responded today in the second half was the first time I have seen our group do that. We have not done that in any game."

"I thought we turned the ball over a lot in the second half. They turned those into fast breaks."

"There were a couple of opportunities where the ball was on the floor. They dove on the floor, we didn't."

"There were a number of opportunities to get a defensive rebound, we didn't. They beat us down the floor and got lay ups."

"Some of that was our offense and some of that was our whole approach to the second half. We have a team for our first 13 games that cheers for each other."

"They have great enthusiasm and great energy. We had great energy for the first 15 minutes of the first half but we came out in the second half and we were stunned. We looked around at each other and were staring at each other. We didn't have that same energy and enthusiasm. It is a tough lesson to learn."
