Columbia (SC) AC Flora safety Rion Davis (2015) attended NC State's game against East Carolina last year and the Pack has given him his only offer. While the game wasn't a good one for the football team Davis said the trip was still well worth it.
If a loss can help a school's chances with a recruit then it just
might have happened that day. Coaches would always prefer a win and
so would recruits. But Davis learned a little something about the
Wolfpack fan base that day.
"What I liked about it was the atmosphere and how the fans reacted.
Even though they were down they stayed with the players the whole
game. I liked the coaches a lot too. Me and Coach Kitchings talk on
a regular basis. I like Coach Kitchings a lot. He really knows how
to teach each player. That was a good trip."
The trip was impressive enough that Davis has set up another visit
to the school. He will be back on campus in just a couple of weeks.
There won't be the hectic, frantic pace of a game day so the coaches
will have a lot more time to spend with Davis one-on-one.
"I'm going to their Junior Day on February 2," he said.
That event will coincide with Tom Lemming's regular photo shoot at
the school. Annually that brings some of the areas's top players to
Raleigh and it's always a good opportunity for the coaches to get
some face time with top targets.
It's easy to understand why the Pack has offered. Last year in South Carolina Davis made 100 stops on defense and five of those came
behind the line. Just as impressive was his pass coverage. He picked
off three throws made by opposing quarterbacks and broke up 14 other
In part because of the offer but also because of the earlier visit
Davis has NCSU near the top of his list.
"North Carolina State, Clemson, Georgia, Florida State and South
Carolina are my favorites. I've visited all the other ones except
Florida State and I'm most likely going to make my way down there
Beyond those schools Davis is also hearing from Tennessee, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, Miami, Auburn and Georgia Tech, but NCSU is his
only offer. The longer that holds true the better the Pack's chances
will be in the long run.
