Gottfried: Florida State A More Complete Team

RALEIGH, N.C. -- NC State head coach Mark Gottfried met with the media to discuss tonight's game against Florida State.

Thoughts on Florida State:
When you watch Florida State, as they start to substitute they get better. We are prepared for it, but we know about their scoring. Those two guys are really good off the bench.

When I watch Florida State, I think of them defensively, but the one thin that's different about them is they score the ball and shoot the ball better than the teams I've seen. They are a lot more complete.

Last year they were really young, and this year they have most everybody back, they are a year older, they are more mature, and they are better. That's what experience does for them. They took some lumps last year because they were younger, but this year is a completely different team.

Thoughts on the need to win home games:
Every game is monumental. It doesn't matter if we play here or anywhere. We treat the road games the same as the home games. We've been able to win a couple at home but whether we play at home or on the road we better be ready to play well.

Point guard situation:
With our team we need Cat and Tyler to both be at the top of their games. Tyler was terrific the other day. He calmed us down, got us into our offense, made two big three's,.. he made some big plays. We need both of our point guards to play well. We'll see how the game unfolds, but we want both playing at a high level.

Thoughts on Tyler Lewis and his mindset:
Tyler has had a great attitude. Because of that, it keeps him alive as far as how he played the other night. If he shut it down or got frustrated, it would be hard to have a game like he did. He's had a great attitude and I think he's going to play well the rest of the way for us.

He's been good. I like that about Tyler. He's a competitor. He really played well the other night. We just need more of it.

Will State play the small lineup more?
At times. We played a lot with our four guards. As one got tired or they were doing something we didn't like we just kind of play with five guards at four spots. I'm not sure we can do that every night, but there will be some times we can. Whether it was he and Desmond or he and Cat together it was a good combination.

We've played most of the year with the two forwards for us, but I think our guys have the confidence either way. If we need to play smaller we can, but some of that depends on what the other team is doing offensively, how well they are playing, and what they are exposing during the game. Those are things you have to figure out as the game unfolds.

Mindset of team with lineup changes:
We've got the nine scholarship guys. We need them all to play well and I have confidence in all nine. If we have to play a different combination we're going to play it. Our guys know each night it can be someone different. They want to win and they've accepted that. They know that's what we need to do to be good.

Desmond Lee's mindest about not starting:
Whether it's he, Ralston, or T.J., they all are going to play a lot. Desmond was great. Everybody wants to start. There's not a guy in America that wants to come off the bench. He came in and really played well... made big plays down the stretch for us.

Thoughts on starting slow:
We have to start off better. It's important for us to come out of the gates with a lot of energy. We've shown some toughness not to roll over.

More zone for State?
You could. We'll see. It depends on how well we're rebounding. If we're effective with that, we'll look at it.

Mindset of team... bouncing back in the second half/handling adversity...
I told our guys yesterday at practice that one of the things I like about our team is that regardless of what's happened we've had a great spirit each day. Our team has never [headed south] because we have great character and great attitude.
