Recruiting Scene: Virginia Tech is a school that has enjoyed recruiting success in the state of North Carolina and they appeared to continue that trend when they landed a commitment from Durham (NC) Hillside defensive back Kalen McCain back in April.
Before pledging to the Hokies, Louisville, Georgia Tech and particularly NC State felt good about their chances so his quick decision caught some recruiting analysts by surprise.
While the Wolfpack hasn't necessarily had good results at Hillside, they persevered and continued to pursue McCain. At some point, Wolfpack running backs coach Des Kitchings connected with McCain and the three-star safety began to have second thoughts. After a few days of consideration, he had a change of heart.
Shortly after publically announcing his decommitment from
Tech, McCain was at NC State for a 7 on 7 camp with his teammates.
Once completed, the Hillside team circled McCain and NC State head
coach Dave Doeren and Kitchings were called over. It was then that
McCain announced his commitment to the Pack.
Why NC State? "I love the environment at NC State and plus, it's close to home. I got to know a lot of the coaches real well and I just feel like I could make a big impact at State real early."
Picked NC State Over: Louisville, Georgia Tech, East Carolina, and Virginia Tech among others
Scouting Report: A safety prospect who has terrific size and athleticism, McCain is a ballhawk who consistently made big plays for Hillside. He's a hard-hitter who can play in the box but is also comfortable in coverage.
