Hawkins Hopes to Visit the Pack

Three-star running back Johnathan Hawkins hopes to visit NC State this spring. Pack Pride has the latest on his recruitment.

Lawrenceville (GA) Central Gwinnett  running back Johnathan Hawkins got his name in the headlines before his sophomore year but we haven't heard much about him since then.

Hawkins started to make headlines during the summer after his freshman season but since then he's been somewhat off the map. He's had five offers for a long time now. Those are from NC State, Penn State, Arkansas, Auburn and Florida State.

The Nittany Lions have had a coaching change since their offer and haven't had as much contact with Hawkins so their offer is somewhat up in the air.

The Wolfpack was the most recent program to offer Hawkins. They extended a scholarship back in early March.

To date, Hawkins has visited a couple of the programs that have offered.

Hawkins visited Florida State two weeks ago and he was treated to a good time.

"It was a Junior Day and we just toured around. We got a good tour again and I learned bits and parts about the school. I guess I like them just because they've showed the most attention and Coach Graham is in contact with me a lot. My options are pretty open though."

Of the other three schools in regular contact with Hawkins he has visited Auburn. That's ironic because Auburn is the school Florida State defeated in the national championship just three months ago. He also had a good time visiting the SEC school but it's been a while since he's been there.

"I visited Auburn twice my sophomore year. It's good. It was a good campus and I enjoyed myself there."

That leaves NCSU and Arkansas. Hawkins is trying to get out to at least one of those schools soon.

"I'm trying to go up to NC State for their spring practice. Coach Nielsen talks to me about once a week or twice a week. He's been trying to get me down there so we just scheduled a date. I've got to check the schedule to make sure I know it.

"He said I would definitely fit into the program well. He wants me to get out there as soon as possible and develop a better relationship with them. Coach Nielsen's cool. Over the phone he seemed pretty laid back."

Nielsen visited Central Gwinnett H.S. in Georgia last spring and he told Hawkins he will be back this spring.

Hawkins said he wants to have a top three by the end of the spring after his visit to NC State.

He is rated a three-star prospect by Scout.com.
