McGirt Has Two At The Top

Durham (NC) Hillside offensive lineman Emanuel McGirt talks with Pack Pride about his top schools.

Several of North Carolina's top prospects were on hand a little over a week ago for the Nike Camp held in Charlotte. One of the most highly-recruited performers was Hillside (NC) offensive tackle Emanuel McGirt.

McGirt (6-5, 270 pounds) had a solid performance but struggled at times with the conditions. He talked with Pack Pride about his performance.

"I lost a couple of one on ones," he said. "I won a lot. I feel like I did pretty good. The mud kind of slipped me up a little bit. I wasn't able to use my athleticism, my quick feet. You really couldn't do that because of the mud. But felt like I did pretty good overall."

McGirt has seen a steady uptick in the number of programs showing interest. He said he is close to a dozen offers with six of those schools currently comprising his favorite's list.

"I've got 11 or 12 offers. Miami was the latest school to offer me. I've got a top six of Tennessee, Miami, South Carolina, NC State, UNC and Duke."

For now, two in-state rivals are battling for the top spot.

"State and Carolina are still at the top but I'm still considering all six."

So what is it about NC State and UNC?

"I like the coaching staff (at State), the facilities, the academics- all of it. I've been there a lot and there's always telling me anytime I want to come over just hit them up. Coach Kitchings, I like him a lot. He's been over to the school a lot. He recruited Kalan (McCain). So I've known him for like two years.

"As for UNC, I went to one of Carolina's practice and I had a chance to sit down with coach Fedora. He was just telling us that we're big assets to the team and can take the program further."

While a particular favorite may not be so clear cut, there's little doubt which school McGirt feels has shown him the most love.

"I would say State is probably after me the hardest. They stay in touch with me all the time. They messaged me this morning and said good luck today. They're on it."

So when does McGirt plan to finally make a decision?

"I'll probably make my decision in July or August. I'm going to visit USC this spring and Tennessee with my coach. I plan to go back to State, Duke and Carolina."
