High School: Charlotte (NC) Christian
NOTES: Philip Walton committed to the NC State coaches on April 1st while in Raleigh for an unofficial visit.
"Basically, NC State is a perfect fit for me," said Walton. "With my education, it's close to home, and there's already guys from my school going there.
"It was really just common sense for me to make my decision now."
Walton is the latest prospect to pick NC State out of Charlotte (NC) Christian. Bo Hines, Garrett Bradbury, and Ty Linton all signed with the Wolfpack in the 2014 recruiting class, and NC State is also pursuing 2015 center Brian Chaffin and 2016 standouts Austin Kendall and Elijah Deveaux.
NC State first spotted Walton while evaluating those other prospects, and the Wolfpack coaches appeared to be intrigued with his upside.
Checking in at 6-foot-7 and 265 pounds, Walton has a lean frame, long arms, and very good feet... traits college coaches look for in offensive linemen. However, because he's relatively new to the sport, Walton knows that he is a work-in-progress.
"There are some tweaks I need to make to my stance, and I need to work on my sets in pass protection," he said. "But, I like the physical part of the game. It just comes natural.
"I grew up not being able to hit anybody because I was always the biggest kid. My parents would tell me to hold back. When I got into football I realized it was legal to hit anybody as much as I wanted to. That was really fun for me."
