"I think the NC State camp was the first one I went to," said Barnett. "I remember back then, I was working with coach Nielsen, and he opened my eyes. I learned so much from him in that short time at the camp... things that I used in my season."
Barnett picked up an offer from NC State after the camp and landed several others last summer before giving an early commitment to Virginia Tech. However, he opened back up his recruitment in February and has steadily added offers.
"My latest offers were from Georgia, LSU, and Alabama," he stated. "Obviously, those are great offers. Alabama was back-to-back champions before last year. That's a big school. LSU is right behind them and then Georgia is right there behind them as one of the top schools in the country."
But, Barnett admits that he may take a different approach to recruiting than a lot of other elite prospects.
"I'm not picking a school just because they win a lot of games," he said. "It's not like I want to go to Alabama just because they win games. I want to go to a school that fits me.
"I have to like their defense. They must have what I want to major in. I have to really like the coaches. I'm not looking at the name of the school. It will be the best fit for me."
Barnett, who now holds offers from NC State, Clemson, South Carolina, North Carolina, LSU, Alabama, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Florida, Florida State, and Auburn among others, says he is seriously considering the in-state schools.
"My relationship with Clemson is really good," he said. "I talk with coach Hobby and coach Elliott, and when I'm up there it's a good environment.
"With South Carolina, I'm still getting to know more about them."
NC State is another program that Barnett is high on.
"I talk to coach Kitchings all the time, and I talk with coach Nielsen too," he said. "Coach Nielsen is constantly telling me about how I can fit the defense and what I can do there. When I visit I'll go in the meetings and see how I fit their system.
"I really like NC State. They have everything to offer me. It's a really nice atmosphere, and they have my major. I could see myself being at NC State, but I want to look at other schools."
Barnett remains wide open and isn't ready to name a leader, but he did say a group of programs stand out right now.
"I don't really have a top five, but I do have up there Clemson, NC State, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Georgia, and Alabama," said Barnett. "I can see myself playing at all those schools. They have what I like, and I'd like to visit some of them again."
Does he have a timeframe for making a decision?
"I'm not set on a timeframe. I'm going to let it go all the way through and make sure I make the right decision."
