What's a player from Yakima (WA) doing with NC State on his list?
Shane Lemieux himself has to laugh when he thinks about it.
"I'm clear across the country in Yakima, Washington. It's kind of funny how it's worked out," said Lemieux when asked about the interest he's received from the Wolfpack.
It started with an offer from the Pack. That came on March 24. They were not the first east coast school to offer. South Carolina had offered before that. They have a lot of appeal because Lemieux's dad lives in South Carolina. He was visiting with the Gamecocks and decided to make the trip to Raleigh as well.
"I was definitely surprised by NC State. I'm from a small town. Our school's pretty small but NC State's right there in Raleigh. My dad's in South Carolina so I'm really pretty familiar with the area. I really love it there. It was just far enough from (downtown) Raleigh to be a college town but if you want to go to the city it's right there.
"I've been talking to Coach Uremovich and the cornerbacks coach. They're great. The coaches have been great at every school I've been to but I definitely have a bond with the offensive line coach. He's a really cool guy and I have a great relationship with all those guys. I call either the defensive backs coach or the offensive line coach once a week or twice a week. We're talking pretty much all the time."
Lemieux even said that NC State's facilities matched up favorably with some of the most widely acclaimed in the entire nation.
"I've been to Oregon and they definitely have the powerhouse facilities but they're definitely on par with Oregon's. The thing with Oregon is they have three underwater treadmills. NC State just has one. That's just a comparison. Their weight room is great. I loved all their facilities. They gave me a tour. I really liked the feel of the stadium. It's almost like it's under the ground."
The offensive lineman said he's already planning to return to NC State and South Carolina. He does plan to make his college decision before he takes any official visits so this isn't going to stretch out indefinitely. But he doesn't want to rush and wants to make sure he knows everything he needs to before boxing himself in with a decision.
"I do want to get it done before my senior season. With all this recruiting I have to call coaches every single day and I can't imagine doing that during football season. We have the month of May off in track so I'm going to take a trip back down to the South. I'll visit NC State again, North Carolina, South Carolina and Clemson."
It's clear that Lemieux has a lot of interest in South Carolina both because of their success and because of where his father lives. But he made it clear that NC State is located close enough to his dad to benefit from that.
"NC State's fairly close to where he lives. It's maybe a two and a half hour drive. My dad's definitely a big part of my life. He watches all my games and he's a big supporter."
