Alpharetta (GA) QB Austin King has roughly a dozen scholarship offers including South Florida, West Virginia, Central Florida and Southern Miss but he wants to find out if he will get any others before he cuts his list.
The list-cutting could happen as soon as the end of this week because King thinks he will know by then if he will have new offers on the basis of his performance during the open evaluation period this spring. Lots of coaches have come by to watch him throw including NC State. Wolfpack offensive coordinator Matt Canada was in Alpharetta last Friday to watch King.
Canada had planned to watch King throw earlier in the spring but the 3-star quarterback had a sprained ankle that pushed that back.
"We've gotten to know each other over the phone. He told me after he sees a couple more guys he's going to go back to Coach Doeren and talk about who they want to offer. I feel like I did what I needed to do that day and it's just a matter of when they offer because I think they will eventually."
King said Canada has praised his arm strength and his accuracy. He also thinks he would be a good fit in NC State's offense on the basis of the two visits he's taken to the school and what he has learned while in town both of those times.
He called NC State's offense simple and likes the fact that quarterbacks line up in the shotgun formation at times. King believes he can adapt to different formations and plays. He did seem to raise an eyebrow at the idea of being one of two quarterbacks as NC State plans to bring in a pair this year. Most schools only want one quarterback in each class.
King camped at NC State last summer and said he liked seeing how the coaches work. When he visited four months ago he toured the facilities and talked to the coaches again. He said their interest in him has increased since that last trip.
"I plan on narrowing it down after this week. I should know which schools are going to offer by the end of this week and after that I'll plan my visits. Out of the schools that have offered I already know I'm going to visit West Virginia, South Florida and Central Florida. I really like Indiana right now. NC State's taking two quarterbacks. I don't know. We'll see about that. I like Kentucky as well."
