Gaines: "I Love The Coaches"

WASHINGTON, N.C. -- Rocky Mount (NC) Nash Central defensive end Houshun Gaines attended his second Shrine Bowl combine on Saturday.

Rocky Mount (NC) Nash Central defensive end Houshun Gaines attended his second Shrine Bowl combine on Saturday.

"I went the first time as a defensive end," said Gaines. "I had a good time, but I wanted to come back as an outside linebacker and show some versatility. I wanted to also get my numbers up, which I did. That's really all it was about."

Gaines checked in at 6-foot-3 and 219 pounds, and he had a low 40 of 4.78 seconds. He also posted a 4.62 shuttle, an 8-7 broad jump, and lifted 185 pounds 19 times.

What schools like most about Gaines is his ability to turn the corner and pressure the quarterback.

"They like the way I rush the passer," he said. "Wherever they feel I can make the most plays that's where I'll play. It might be defensive end or linebacker. They run different schemes so it just all depends on who I pick."

Gaines has seen his recruitment take off over the last couple of months. He's added offers from programs like Miami, Florida, NC State, Virginia Tech, Boston College, and Wake Forest.

Two of his most recent came from Miami and Florida, and he plans to visit both in the next couple of weeks.

"I'll be going to Miami and Florida here soon," he stated. "It's an amazing experience, getting those offers. Florida is a SEC school, and everyone knows about 'The U.' For them to offer me back-to-back... it just blew me away."

Next up for Gaines is a return visit to NC State. He was in Raleigh last month after adding an offer from the Wolfpack. What appeals to him about NC State?

"It's close to home, and I love the coaches," Gaines said. "I really didn't know much about NC State growing up because I was a Carolina fan, but I really like the coaches there.

"Coach Doeren is a great guy, and coach Barlow is a great guy. Coach Howle, he came from Penn State and he's from Bunn. I like him a lot too. I love all those guys, and they've been recruiting me hard. I just really wanted to get down there again."

Previously Gaines had named Virginia Tech his leader, but he has since opened back up his recruitment.

"I'm a little more wide open now and re-evaluating everything," he said. "I still love Virginia Tech. I'm ready to get back up to see coach Beamer, coach Foster, and coach Wiles. I love those guys and can't wait to get back on campus soon."

Does he have a timeframe for making a decision?

"I'll probably make a list on August 1st," he stated. "I planned on committing that day because I wanted to have a clear mind going into my senior year. But, I want to make sure I make the right decision.

"Whenever I get that feeling that I'm 100% sure, that's when I'll pull the trigger. I don't have a set date right now."
