North Carolina offered Smith while he was in Chapel Hill for a visit.
"I've been talking with coach McGrath for a long time," said Smith. "He wanted to me sit down with coach Williams and talk to him. I went up there hoping to get an offer, and that's what happened when we talked in his office.
"That offer meant a lot. It's a great school, an in-state school."
Smith was in Raleigh visiting NC State prior to heading over to North Carolina. The Wolfpack was one of the first schools to offer the elite 2016 prospect a scholarship.
"NC State, it was really nice," he said. "That was my third time going there for a visit. I like the coaches a lot, and they've got a good group of guys. I just like hanging out with them."
Smith admits that he grew up a fan of the Wolfpack because that is who his grandmother cheered for.
"I've always liked the school," he added.
He made a return trip to NC State over the weekend, where he was able to talk some more with the coaches and players.
"The coaches were basically saying that they are right there with UNC and Duke as far as being competitive," said Smith. "They said they just need to keep getting guys that can get them over the hump."
Next up for Smith is a trip to Wake Forest on Tuesday.
Because he's a member of the 2016 class, Smith is in no hurry to make a decision. While he maintains that he doesn't have a leader, he did say one school is expressing more interest than the others.
"I think right now NC State is recruiting me the hardest," he said. "I'm the closest with their staff, and I talk with them more than anybody else."
Smith averaged 17.6 points, 9.3 assists and 6.9 rebounds during his sophomore campaign. He is currently rated the No. 6 point guard and the No. 25 overall recruit in the 2016 class.
"I like to get my teammates involved and just make plays," he said. "I compete hard on the defensive end. I have always been able to shoot from outside. My main weakness, I think is moving without the ball."
What will Smith be looking for in a school when the time comes to make a decision?
"Where I feel the most comfortable. I'm going to base it on feel."
