Byrd put up points all year and most believe they will do it all over again beginning in September. Offensive tackle Marley Conley will be a big reason for their success if they have it this year. The 6-6 offensive tackle has a long reach, good bench and experience to boot so the offense will rely heavily on his ability to open holes and offer protection.
Conley camped at NC State in June and had a solid outing. He has long arms, moved extremely well and was one of the best during one on ones. Conley has a hunch that the coaches might be thinking about him.
“That was my first time ever going there. My very first time at NC State. I had been to some other camps and whatnot but that was my first time there. I did pretty good. They said I’m at the top of their recruiting board and I was one of the top five players that showed out for them.”
While working out at right tackle the coaches put Conley up against some of the best defensive ends at the camp and he held his own. They were impressed but still were not quite ready to offer. They might be able to take their time.
Conley said he would be very tempted to give the Wolfpack his verbal commitment if they did offer him.
Wake Forest is another school that wants to see him up close and in a camp setting. He was scheduled to camp their this past weekend. Duke has stayed in touch with Conley and they watched him in person during that third round playoff game; a loss to Hunt. East Carolina stays in touch from time to time as well.
“I had been talking to NC State since before that camp. They’re pretty close to offering. I talk to Coach U the O-Line coach once a week. We talk every week. The first person to recruit me was Coach White the safeties coach. Then I talked to the D-Line coach and he came to my school once. Then Coach U started talking to me. All I can say is it’s a great place and I could see myself going to a place like that.”
