Doeren: "We Finished"

RALEIGH, N.C. -- NC State head coach Dave Doeren met with the media to discuss the upcoming game against Old Dominion.

"Obviously, we are excited to be 1-0. It was a great comeback for our team. There are a lot of things that, when you view the film, we could have done better, but the one thing we did is we finished."

"Offensively, I thought we took care of the ball except for the one throw by Jacoby that he forced."

"On turnover margin, we came out even. The most disappointing thing probably is that we forced four fumbles in the game but only recovered the one and dropped a ‘gimme’ pick."

"So those are plays, being an opportunistic team that we need to be, we need to find a way to make those plays."

"We averaged 4.9 yards per carry, 2.2 yards after contact. I was proud of that. We only had six of what we call “explosive plays” and our goal is to have ten of them a game. That is an area we need to improve."

"They didn’t have a single tackle in our backfield during the game, no tackles for loss for them, and we gave up one sack—which is one too many."

"Pretty clean game for the first game, there was three penalties. We had a 99-yard touchdown drive coming off a turnover, which was a turning point in the game."

"On first downs, we averaged 6.9 yards so that was a big part of our success I thought."

"Jacoby got into a rhythm and completed 70 percent of his passes to nine different receivers, so we were able to distribute the ball on Saturday."

"I thought our D-line, our corners and Hakim our free safety had good games for us."

"We struggled at some positions. There were six plays that really defined the day for our defense. Those six plays led to 260 yards out of their total offense."

"In the red zone, they got down there five times and scored no touchdowns. That is outstanding. We played 20 new guys, so a lot of guys got a lot of new experience."

"It was a hot day. I give a lot of credit to our strength and conditioning staff. We were well hydrated."

"I hear some of the fans weren’t and they, our opponents, weren’t either. I appreciate the fans that stayed. That means a lot to us."

"I have a lot of respect for [Old Dominion] coaching staff. I know a couple of those guys. They do a great job. They moved up this year."

"It will be another great game. I am excited for our fans to have another night game and get a chance to see the Pack in Black uniform and helmet. Our players, and fans and recruits that have reached out to me, were excited about the release and the look."
