Boston College (3-2) at NC State (4-2) Oct. 11, 3:30, RSN
Here's The Deal: Which Boston College and NC State show up this weekend at Carter-Finley Stadium? The answer could go a long way to determining who bowls in December, and whose season ends early. The Eagles have beaten USC … yet lost to Colorado State before getting a week off. The Pack jumped all over Florida State … yet has been capsized, 90-17, over the last seven quarters. Two of the ACC’s more schizophrenic members are hoping to use Week 7 as a turning point in an otherwise topsy-turvy season.
Why Boston College Might Win: The gameplan this week is simple, as if it isn’t always simple at BC. The Eagles want to run the ball right down the throats of the shopworn NC State D. The Pack has been clueless over the last two games, albeit against the ACC’s top two teams. Boston College will attack it with the league’s top ground game, which gets contributions from QB Tyler Murphy and young backs John Hilliman and Myles Willis.
Why NC State Might Win: BC has one speed on offense, its ground game. The Pack, though, can move the ball in myriad ways. Yeah, the bottom fell out last week at Clemson, which will happen occasionally with a young team. But prior to that point, State had scored at least 41 points in four straight games. QB Jacoby Brissett is a dynamic playmaker, and his backs are averaging more than five yards a carry. And balanced teams will give a mediocre Eagle defense fits.
Who To Watch Out For: Can Brissett recapture his electrifying form from the beginning of the Florida State? State needs him to be that guy, especially after he went 4-of-18 for 35 yards versus Clemson. The Wolfpack can’t fall behind early, because it makes the team one-dimensional, and will allow BC to tee off on Brissett in the pocket.
What’s Going To Happen: Okay, so maybe NC State isn’t the team that briefly made Florida State look like Florida A&M two weeks ago. But it’s also not as bad as it’s been recently. Brissett will get back on track, outplaying Murphy in an intriguing battle of one-time Florida Gator quarterbacks.
Prediction: NC State 28 … Boston College 27
Line: NC State -4 o/u: 56.5
Must Watch Factor: 5: Last Week Tonight – 1: Bad Judge … 2
