RALEIGH, N.C. -- NC State head coach Mark Gottfried met with the media following the exhibition win over Queens.

"I thought for an exhibition game, especially the first half, it was a good challenge for our guys."

"I thought our bench gave us a great spark in the first half. They got things going for us, especially Dez Lee defensively. Caleb Martin and [Abdul-Malik Abu] both came in the game and gave us a lift."

"I thought in the second half we were a lot quicker. We got in the passing lanes, we defended pretty well and we turned a lot of those opportunities into fast breaks to open the game up."

"We have got a lot of young guys. We turned the lights on, put people in the stands and we started the game off and it seemed like we had some jitters. Hopefully, we will get that out of the way and get ready for Friday night."

"The cream always rises to the top and competition always makes us better. I think right now, you have got a group of starters that need to understand those guys that come off the bench, they’re hungry. Caleb is hungry, Malik is hungry and Dez showed that tonight. He wants to play."

"I like that about our team. If I am one of the guys that started tonight, I would go back to the dorm and tell myself, ‘I better bring my A-game every night’ because the cream always rises."

"I think with BeeJay, he has so much confidence that he can block your shot. A lot of times, he will let you catch it and almost bait you into it and then try to block it, which against Queens College he can do that but we have got to make sure defensively he uses the principles that we want him to. He is a good shot blocker and has a good presence in there. He is coming though he is not where he needs to be yet."

"I am going to try to get our coach’s association to try to change the rule next year. I want us to get another opportunity, a third game. I would really like to scrimmage twice then play an exhibition game. Our scrimmage [vs. Georgia] was really good for us."

"Here is what I told the guys after the game—I think that we are quick enough, athletic enough and deeper that we can defend better and for longer periods of time."

"Defensively, we should be a lot better this year."

"We are a long way away and for a lot of reasons. We think here in November that we know who should start and that could change. They are hungry, they are coming and they are pretty good. It is going to take a while to see who on this team needs to play and how much we sub to find that real rhythm. We are a ways from that but I like some things about our team."
