Hughes Down To Three

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- New Bern's Mike Hughes talks recruiting after winning a state title and being named game MVP.

New Bern and its star quarterback Mike Hughes put the finishing touches on a storybook season Friday night at BB&T Field in Winston-Salem. The Bears beat Charlotte Catholic 23-15 and claimed the 4A state title.

For his part, Hughes rushed 22 times for 85 yards while completing 5 of 11 passes for 133 yards including scoring strikes of 60 and 37 yards. He was named the game’s most outstanding player.

Hughes has one more game to play and on Saturday will travel to Spartanburg for the Shrine Bowl. However, much of his attention will now turn to recruiting as he tries to figure out where he’ll spend the next four of five years. Pack Pride caught up with him shortly after his game Friday night for the latest on his recruitment.

Can you tell us where you stand with your recruiting currently?

My top three choices now right now are Florida, State and Carolina, obviously. I’ve just been trying to take it real slow and obviously I have to pick somewhere real soon. I’m still undecided but soon ya’ll will hear about my announcement.

When is the latest you can announce and still enroll early?

Probably after the Shrine Bowl.

Have you had a chance to talk to the new coach at Florida yet?

I’ve talked to the new coach at Florida. We had good vibes. I haven’t gotten to talk to him too much so I don’t have a lot to say.

How did the in-home visit with Larry Fedora go?

It was pretty good. We got to talk a lot about life outside of football- just the important things about getting your education.

How about NC State?

It was the same with them. I’ve built a good relationship with both of those coaches and there’s more to football than what people think.

With colleges recruiting you so hard and fans hitting you up on social media all the time does it create any pressure?

Sometimes it does but I’ve got a strong mother and she’s helped me out a lot and taught me how to keep my composure and just focus on that one goal and that’s what we did tonight.

What is the most important factor in making your decision?

Getting on the field early and playing time

Most schools like you at cornerback but have any talked about you doing anything other than defense?

Definitely, schools love the ball in my hands and my athletic ability and they think I can be more of a threat than just being a cornerback

Who would you say is recruiting you the hardest?

I have to say between State and Carolina. They’ve been recruiting me since my sophomore year and they were my first two offers. I think that’s just real big to me.

Have you had a chance to bond or become friends with any of the players in your class that is being recruited

Travis Sabdo (quarterback at Havelock)

Do you think you know where you want to go but it’s just a deal where you’re just waiting for the right time to announce it?

Kind of but you know my mom jokes with me sometimes that one minute I want to go here and the next minute I want to go here.
