"State offered me the preferred walk-on spot over the summer," he said. "I pretty much knew I wanted to do that, but I kind of wanted to keep my options open about everything. I recently decided it's where I was going. That's always where I wanted to go."
What does Musselwhite like about the Wolfpack?
"It just feels like home," he said. "It's a lot like New Bern. The coaches are similar. They are all great guys. Plus, Josh [Taylor] and Bra'lon [Cherry] are on the team so that will be good for me. I'll know somebody when I get in there."
Taylor and Cherry played with Musselwhite on New Bern's 2012 state championship team, he is hoping one of his current teammates, Mike Hughes, joins him in Raleigh.
Hughes, who also made the Shrine Bowl team, rode down to Spartanburg with Musselwhite.
"I've been talking to Mike a lot to try and get him to come up there," he said. "[Laughing] I'm doing my best, but he's kind of a hard book to read."
As for Musselwhite, he will enroll at NC State in January. An all-conference selection and two-time state champion, he played center for the Bears but at 6-foot-3 and 220 pounds he could eventually play multiple positions for the Wolfpack.
"The coaches said they want me to longsnap," he stated. "It depends on how big I get when I get in the weight room, but I could play some offensive line or tight end.
"All I want to do is help the team be able to win as much as I can. That's the best feeling in the world. Getting there January 5th, I'll get a jumpstart. I know I need to get bigger so I can help the team in the fall."
