Recruiting Scene: NC State had been one of Phillips’ first offers during his junior year at Pelion High and as a result the Pack was able to get him up on a couple of unofficial visits during the fall of 2013. As Phillips began to collect offers throughout the spring of 2014 the Wolfpack stayed in prime position.
Despite heavy pursuit by Wake Forest and a late push from UNC, Phillips committed to NC State in May and decided to enroll early to jumpstart his collegiate career.
Why NC State? “They've been recruiting me since day one. They've always shown me the most love. NC State was one of the first schools to offer me, and coach Kitchings has been recruiting me since I was a sophomore. Plus, I have a lot of faith in coach Doeren. I think he's a great coach and I feel like they are building something special in Raleigh.”
Picked NC State Over: Wake Forest, East Carolina, UNC and others
Scouting Report: “Phillips has tremendous size for a safety. He is long and rangy and has a frame that can handle more muscle mass. Phillips runs well and is extremely athletic. As a former wideout, Phillips also has excellent ball skills. He is relatively new to playing defense however and will need time to learn the position and will also need to work on the fundamentals of solid tackling.” – Pack Pride Scouting Report
