3-star cornerback Mark Gilbert (6-2, 170 pounds) is one of the top football prospects in North Carolina for the class of 2016. However, he also happens to be one of the state's best basketball players and that's given the Terry Sanford standout something to consider as he ponders his collegiate future.
"That's been the hot question right now," Gilbert told Pack Pride. "I've considered it. Once I get up to the school I'm going to attend I'll probably take a look at it but I feel like football is where I have the best chance at going pro so the passion is there for basketball and will always be there."
So who did Gilbert pull for in basketball growing up?
"I was actually a Duke fan growing up. Them being in the championship game I had to go for them."
On the football side, things have been somewhat hectic as Gilbert has landed better than a dozen offers. He updated us on the latest.
"I have 14 offers right now. The past two weeks South Carolina and Louisville have offered. Pittsburgh, they're all I knew growing up. Watching my cousin play there (Darrelle Revis) my uncle played there and my cousin is the starting safety there now. I have another cousin that signed this year and will be there next year. So growing up that's pretty much all I knew. They'll always have a spot in my heart."
Pittsburgh may boast a ton of family connections but he'll never leave the state of North Carolina if NC State has anything to say about it.
"I love NC State. I love NC State. They were one of my first offers and I've been up there many times. Whenever I go up there I love it more and more. I love the coaching staff, coach Doeren, coach Barlow and coach White. And red is my favorite color so that helps a little bit too. Coach Barlow has been on me the most and if I go up there he will be my position coach. Me and him have a very strong relationship. We joke around and he's a very good coach. I don't have anything set but I'll definitely be going back up to State over the summer."
Gilbert added that a trio of schools have been showing the most interest of late but for now, he doesn't have a set listof favorites.
"Duke, State and Penn State have been showing the most love," Gilbert said. "There are a few sticking out but I don't want to say but I'll announce when I've narrowed it down and I will make my decision before the season starts."
When that decision comes, what will be the most important factor Gilbert considers?
"The players. I love a family feel and being around players that will have your back and they know you'll have their back."
