NC State gave Patrick Kearns a reason to be excited when they offered last week. The Pack joined Syracuse but those were just the first of several offers to come Kearns' way of late. Cal, Florida and Virginia Tech all offered this week and it's safe to say that his recruiting has now taken off.
Kearns (6-6, 270) is from Rome (GA) where the ACC and the SEC meet. The Orange got a head start on most other schools when they convinced Kearns to travel all the way from Georgia to Syracuse (N.Y.) for their spring game. He found a lot to like at the northern ACC member institution but he has not seen enough to prompt a decision.
NC State gave him another reason to wait a little while and hold off on a commitment because with their offer he now has another school to look into.
“I was really excited to get that offer. It’s an ACC school and a great program and a great school. I’ve been in contact with them for about a week or two now so for a little while but not too long. They came by and saw me in person and they liked my film. It was a combination of that.”
Offensive line coach Mike Uremovich may have a name that is difficult for recruits to pronounce when you put them on the spot but Kearns knows it was his position coach that has been talking to him. Uremovich was very excited about Kearns when he discovered him and his endorsement of Kearns to the rest of the staff went a long way towards getting the offer out there quickly.
Kearns has been on the phone and talking to coaches a lot and especially in the last week or two. He's now approaching 20 offers with Illinois and Central Florida offering last week.
He has not visited either of those schools but Kearns has been to Syracuse, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest, Duke and Furman. Had NC State been recruiting Kearns when he traveled through the state of North Carolina for recruiting visits then there is a good chance he would have visited then. He hopes to visit now that the Wolfpack has offered but does not have a specific date set for that trip.
“I do really like the area. I know that from when I visited the others. NC State’s got a great academic program and I like the area so I would like to get up there. Coach Uremovich talks about how they’re on the rise but we really haven’t gotten to talk about a lot with the school yet.”
With new offers coming in almost by the day Kearns said he is in no hurry to commit. By the same token he does not want to wait so long that it becomes a distraction or that opportunities start closing.
