NC State used Matt Dayes on kick returns last season and rotated Bra'lon Cherry and Bo Hines, who is no longer on the team, at punt returner. However, it sounds like a true freshman will be handling both jobs this fall for the Wolfpack.
"Nyheim [Hines] is an electric guy back there," said head coach Dave Doeren. "We feel good about him. We need to get him hit a few times and get the butterflies out of his body on offense probably before we have him returning kicks, but ultimately we'd love him to be the guy."
Doeren added that he's also pleased with his other options.
"We feel good about Cherry and [Maurice] Trowell also," he said. "Matt Dayes... we feel like we have four guys that we can put back there, but athletically Nyheim gives us something back there we haven't had in a while."
The Wolfpack held their second scrimmage of fall camp on Saturday, and Hines scored on the offensive side of the ball.
"I believe it was a jet play," said Doeren. "We handed it to him, and he made a couple of guys miss. He had a couple of catches in the two-minute drill. He got blown up on a bubble today which was good for him to take a shot like that."
Nyheim Hines, a four-star signee in the 2015 recruiting class, was a dynamic returner and playmaker in high school. He totaled nearly 100 touchdowns his last two seasons, including four return touchdowns.
