NC State landed a huge commitment on Thursday from Fayetteville (NC) Trinity Christian standout Dennis Smith, arguably the top point guard in the country.
"It set up perfectly for me," Smith told Pack Pride. "They came to see me yesterday, and after thinking about it I knew that I didn't want to prolong it any longer. I was ready to commit to State.
"The biggest factor was how much they wanted me. They were the first school to come see me for my visits yesterday, and coach Gottfried was also at every game he could be at this summer. That means a lot. I knew he trusted me and was going all out for me."
An elite floor general, Smith has a chance to be a star on the college level. He is rated a five-star recruit and the No. 8 player in the country by Scout.com.
"Smith may not reside in Raleigh for long, but now the Wolfpack should enjoy an NBA representative who can proudly represent the program the way Chris Paul does for Wake Forest," said Scout.com Recruiting Analyst Rob Harrington. "In my career there have been three great N.C. point guards: Paul, John Wall and now Dennis Smith."
