Why You Need To Care
Now that Virginia Tech and NC State underachieved in Week 5, both programs are eager to get back on the rails before the season starts slipping through their grasp. The Hokies have actually fallen in two straight games, losing to East Carolina before coming up short to Pitt last Saturday. Frank Beamer has promised changes for a team that’s now below .500. Turns out the Pack was living a lie in September. A mystery team after fattening up on a soft non-conference schedule, State couldn’t hold serve in Raleigh in the ACC opener with Louisville.
Why NC State Will Win
The Pack boasts the better offensive personnel. Better quarterback, Jacoby Brissett. Better feature back, Matt Dayes. And a better chance of moving the sticks on Friday night. Va Tech is too inconsistent with the ball, bottoming out with 100 total yards in the loss last week to the Panthers. For all the hype, the Hokies are giving up more than five yards a carry this fall.
Why Virginia Tech Will Win
The Wolfpack wilted in its first game with a quality opponent. The Hokies, meanwhile, have been battle-tested since facing top-ranked Ohio State on Labor Day. State was abused at the point of attack by Louisville on Saturday. And while Tech has been a defensive disappointment so far, the quickness of linemen Dadi Nicolas, Ken Ekanem, Corey Marshall and Luther Maddy presents problems for a lumbering Pack O-line.
Player Who Matters
This week could mark the return of Va Tech QB Michael Brewer, who’s been out since breaking his collarbone in the opener. He’ll be a game-time decision for the staff. The Hokies probably won’t have a lot of success throwing the ball no matter who starts, so it’s incumbent on backs J.C. Coleman and Trey Edmunds to spark the ground game.
What’s Going To Happen?
Friday night at Lane Stadium will boil down to want-to, because both teams are reeling from demoralizing losses. Brissett is a wild card for his ability to break down defenses with his arm and legs. But Virginia Tech’s advantage at the line of scrimmage will help neutralize the Wolfpack quarterback and spur a close—and much-needed—win.
