NC State will open the 2017 season against South Carolina in the Belk College Kickoff Game at Bank of America Stadium, the Charlotte Sports Foundation announced today. The specific date and kick off time, along with complete ticket information, will be announced at a later date.
"We have been in discussions with South Carolina for a couple of years and were able this past August to find a mutually acceptable season to play," said NC State Director of Athletics Debbie Yow. "Wolfpackers will look forward with great anticipation to this ACC-SEC matchup."
NC State has faced South Carolina 57 times in a series that dates back to 1900, with the Gamecocks holding a one-game advantage at 27-26-4. There have been a series of ‘firsts’ in the games between the two schools.
The last time the two squads met was in Columbia in 2009, the first game of Wolfpack quarterback Russell Wilson’s standout career. In 1999, the Gamecocks came to Raleigh to open their season in the first game for their first-year head coach, former Wolfpack head coach Lou Holtz. The Wolfpack played its first game in Carter-Finley Stadium against South Carolina in 1966, and in 1957, NC State defeated the Gamecocks to earn its first ACC title.
"It will be a great opportunity for our team and for our fans to be able to play a game against an SEC opponent in Charlotte," said NC State head coach Dave Doeren. "We have many players and fans from that area of the state and we expect to see Bank of America Stadium filled with Wolfpack red."
NC State has played in Bank of America Stadium on six occasions, most recently in the 2011 Belk Bowl, a 31-24 victory over Louisville.
“We are excited to announce that these two prominent universities will be facing off in Charlotte in 2017,” said Will Webb, Executive Director of the Charlotte Sports Foundation. “It is a great time to be a college football fan in Charlotte, and we look forward to welcoming Gamecock and Wolfpack fans to our city.”
In addition to the opener against South Carolina, State’s 2017 non-conference slate features a road trip to South Bend to face Notre Dame and home games against Marshall and Furman. ACC opponents that year include trips to Wake Forest, Boston College, Pitt and Florida State, while the Wolfpack will host Clemson, Louisville, Syracuse and North Carolina at Carter-Finley Stadium. NC State's goal is to move its previously scheduled return game with Troy to a later year. The home matchup with Furman has been moved from opening weekend to the third week of the season to accommodate the Belk College Kickoff Game.
The Gamecocks are the latest addition to a series of future Power 5, non-conference opponents for the Wolfpack.
