Gottfried: Smith Is Electric

RALEIGH, N.C. -- NC State head coach Mark Gottfried met with the media to discuss Friday night's season opener against William & Mary and the signing of Dennis Smith.

"I would like it.  I'm a guy that I think most things start with our offense, but I really like our team defensively.  I think even last year we got to where we were pretty solid defensively."

"With BeeJay around the rim at times and with our quickness really all over the floor, I think we can be a team that can defend."

"For me, I want us to be a team that gets up-and-down the floor to try and score which normally leads to more possessions in a game.  Sometimes it's harder to keep the score down low if we're trying to score."

"I do think this team can be a really good defensive team."

"I think so.  I think offensively it usually takes a little more time to figure out who needs to do what."

"I'm trying to figure out exactly what to do with Cody. I really like him. He's had a great fall camp. I'm going to play him some at forward, some at the backup point.  Trying to figure out how to make that a really good flow for him is important."

"Lennard is coming back and getting better everyday from his injury."

"Terry didn't do as much for me as I wanted him to do the other night, and we really need him to step forward."

"I do think early on our defense needs to be really, really sharp."

"I think we're in great shape and ready to start the year. We'll hopefully get better as the year goes on."

"Guys have went at each other pretty hard.  There's been a lot of competition for spots and they know it. I always tell them, competition makes you better.  You can't be afraid of competition. That has pushed them harder as well."

"You're ready to get out and play games against other people."

"We're excited about Dennis. I'm thrilled because he's an electric kind of player.  When I'm watching him, just as a fan, it's hard for me to take my eyes off of him. He's so athletic and makes great plays, athletic plays.  He's a fun, fun player to watch.  I think he's going to have a chance to make a big impact right from day one."

"I think with us, just about everybody we have on our team we've had to beat good teams.  We're not backing down from anybody in recruiting."

"The best players have great options, and we think we're one of them. We think we're one of the best options anyone can have."

"He had good choices just like a lot of the guys on our team."
