Gottfried: "We Need To Execute Better"

BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- NC State head coach Mark Gottfried met with the media after the loss to Arizona State.

"A team has to learn how to make key plays at the right time, whether it's getting a defensive rebound or moving your feet."

"In the first half I thought we took quick shots... we shoot 34% from the field. In the second half we execute our offense, now we're getting good shots, and we shoot 65% from the field."

"We need to execute better and we're not there yet."

"Defensively we're good at times but we need to learn how to make the right plays at the right time."

"That's a big swing.  You got to have poise. You just can't do that. This isn't the playground, it's college basketball."

"We gave up two very key defensive rebounds where we didn't come up with the basketball. For us to become a good team we have to get better."

"It's hard but injuries are a part of basketball. We got to play with who we have."

"That's not even a part of our thought process. Guys we have playing, we've got to continue to get better."

"I watched [Ben Simmons] in high school.  He was as good a high school player as I've seen in a long time. I've watched Kobe, LeBron, I watched Tracy McGray, Kevin Garnett... that group in high school. When I watched Ben I thought he was potentially in that group of guys... he was that kind of a high school player, with his size and his body and his skillset.  He's a terrific player, there's no doubt about that."

"We got a lot of fouls where you're in there battling for rebounds, battling for position."

"Young players start to play tentative and they aren't very effective.  They've got to learn how to still be aggressive."

"I thought Malik got tentative defensively, afraid to foul, and was giving up baskets."
