Chaminade Madonna College Prep junior defensive end Chris Whittaker was beyond excited when NC State offered him a scholarship in early December. They weren't the first ACC school to offer... that distinction belongs to Syracuse. However, they were the second and they did offer before a lot of other schools came into play.
Syracuse, Bowling Green and Charlotte all offered Whittaker (6-3, 245) before NC State, but it was the Wolfpack that was on Whittaker's mind after picking up the offer.
"I was excited... real excited," said Whittaker. "They had been sending me mail since about last year. They had been sending me mail about games and stuff but other than that I hadn't been hearing much from them. What happened was they called my head coach to tell him they were offering. Then my head coach called me. He just told me that they had offered."
Whittaker was at home with an illness the day he received the offer so he isn't sure if the NC State coaching staff paid a visit to his high school. He suspects that's what happened.
"I don't really know anything about them, but I'm real excited about it."
Purdue, UCF, Georgia and FAU coaches have been talking to the staff at Chaminade Madonna about Whittaker.
Whittaker said he wants to visit NC State "sometime" but that could be a while from now. He has not been to any games anywhere recently but over the summer he camped at state schools like FSU, USF and Florida.
On the year Whittaker estimated that he had 35 tackles, 10 for loss and two sacks. He's not raw but he hasn't been playing football for his whole life. Whittaker said he's played organized football for about five years.
Whittaker plays defensive end and outside linebacker in high school so that may mean he could play rushing the edge either standing up or from the dirt.
