Byrnes wide receiver Chavis Dawkins is coming off a senior season where he totaled 30 receptions for 546 yards and six touchdowns. However, he's hoping this week at the Shrine Bowl he can enhance his reputation.
"I do feel like [I'm underrated]," said Dawkins. "I don't know why it is, but I'm just trying to go out there and prove people wrong... that's about it.
"I need to keep working on my footwork and routes. I also can work on my blocking. What do I do well? Catch and run."
Playing for South Carolina this week at the Shrine Bowl, Dawkins is enjoying the experience.
"It's been great," he said. "You're playing with and against the best around, so that's good."
On the recruiting trail the 6'2 receiver holds offers from NC State, Louisville, Wake Forest, Georgia Southern and App. State among others. So far he's taken just one official visit, a recent trip to NC State.
"It was good," he said. "I had a lot of fun. I like the coaches, and the facilities are nice. The people are nice, and I like the area. It was a good trip.
"They said I'd be able to come in and maybe play. I know I'd need to learn the system to compete for a spot at any college, but I'm ready for that."
One school who could potential join the mix is South Carolina. The Gamecocks are still evaluating their options at wide receiver, and Dawkins appears to be on their radar.
"I may visit South Carolina, but I don't know," he said. "It's up in the air right now. They came to see me last Monday, and they said they need to see the receiver coach and if they like ushe likes me, that's about it."
Following the Shrine Bowl Dawkins will spend some time at home before announcing his college decision in January.
"After this I'll spend time with the family," he said. "I haven't seen my family in a long time... since football season started. I'll probably have my announcement January 9th."
Why January 9th?
"Well, really it's just a date I'm free," said Dawkins, laughing.
