Duncan (SC) Byrnes wideout Chavis Dawkins landed his first scholarship offer from NC State and the Pack has remained loyal to that offer for nearly 18 months. However, it's possible that an in-state school could potentially land him should they decide to make a last minute pledge.
Dawkins has mentioned in the past his desire to land an offer from South Carolina and the recent hiring of Will Muschamp has renewed the Gamecock's interest. Time is winding down, however, but an upcoing visit to Columbia could play a huge role in Dawkins' final decision.
"I will probably be making my decision in January, early January. I have an official visit set with South Carolina in January. They haven't offered yet. They want me down there but I'll just go down there and see what they're talking about and go from there. I'm also looking at visiting Appalachian State and maybe Louisville."
While Dawkins hasn't made a huge splash in the recruiting rankings, he has had some tremendous efforts on the biggest stages. He had four catches for 210 yards and three touchdowns in a win over perennial North Carolina powerhouse Mallard Creek. This past Saturday Dawkins led South Carolina with six receptions for 62 yards and two touchdowns.
Byrnes High School traditionally puts out some of the best players from South Carolina and Dawkins was looking to continue that trend in the Shrine Bowl.
"I've looked at the other guys that have played in the Shrine Bowl (from Byrnes) and I just tried to do what they do to keep it going."
Dawkins added that his time in Spartanburg and the interest it helped him generate on the recruiting trail was something he'll always remember.
"It's been a good week. The Shrine Bowl is a great game. It's just something I'll cherish and never forget."
NOTE: Dawkins has reportedly set the South Carolina visit for January 15th.
