Gottfried: "We Feel Really Good"

PITTSBURGH, PA -- NC State head coach Mark Gottfried met with the media after the 78-61 win over Pittsburgh.

"I thought we defended really well and did a nice job of not allowing them get second-chance points in the first half."

"I think they had two offensive rebounds in the first half, I thought that was probably the biggest key for us, the way we started the game."

"In the second half it's hard, even though I'm telling them to keep their foot on the pedal and not get conservative, I think there's kind of a natural ticker in everybody's mind to slow down a little bit.  I think we got tentative defensively."

"Pitt's a really good team.  I've watched a number of their games on tape, and we beat a really, really good basketball team here tonight.  We feel really good."

"We played Carolina pretty tough and I thought the difference in the second half was our inability to get a rebound.  The last couple of days for us that was more of an emphasis than anything else. How well can we finish a defensive possession... can we get a defensive rebound? I thought our guys in the first half did a good job of that."

"It's really important.  I've seen bad teams, and we're not bad, but we don't have a lot to show for it in the league so far.  We've played a tough schedule. Our league schedule has been tough and our non-conference schedule was tough.  Our guys have kept battling, but we do need to get some confidence, and winning helps you.  How you play does help, but winning changes the way you feel about yourself.  Hopefully this is something for us that we can build on."

"It doesn't get any easier for us.  The next game we play is Duke. That's the nature of the league. This is my ffith year in the league, and I don't think there's any doubt from top to bottom this is the deepest the ACC has been.  It's not even close.  Everybody has tough games coming."

"With the rule changes and no five-second on the dribbler... it's hard to come back. For us with Cat, he doesn't have to give the ball up, he can keep it."

"One thing about Maverick that I've learned is that he's not afraid, and he has a lot of courage. He's going to be a really good player throughout his career.  He's just one of those guys who is not afraid. I liked his approach.  I felt he would play good tonight, that's kind of the way he is. I thought he made some big shots."
