Meyers: "One Of Us Has To Lead This Team"

RALEIGH, N.C. -- NC State redshirt freshman quarterback Jakobi Meyers met with the media after the first day of spring practice.

Thoughts on his knee injury...
It was when we played Troy, it was the week of Troy that I got hurt. I came back too early. That was my fault. Then it came back again on a freak accident, and then I was out.

When were you back to 100%?
It was fairly quick.  Pretty much [before bowl practices].  They wanted to keep me off scout team to be safe.

How much do you know of the NC State offense?
It's a new system now so we're all learning together. I know enough to make it through day one. Day two... we'll see.

Were you nervous out there?
Yes. Definitely. It's been a minute since I've been behind an offensive line.  Once I got behind the line and threw a few passes I was good.

Is it the same terminology?
He has different names for different plays. He's tried to make it work for us.  Our old plays, he tried to fix around us. We know it, but he's adding a couple of plays and telling us what his terminology is for it.

How energetic is coach Drinkwitz?
He's a ball of energy.  He loves to get you pumped up. 6:00 in the morning... 5:30. It doesn't matter.  He's waking us up, telling us to text him when we get up. He's looking out for us and getting us fired up.

How much Boise State film have you watched?
A lot.  He's showing us everything. They had a 3,000-yard passer, a 1000-yard rusher, and a 1,000-yard receiver. We're trying to do something on our own... make history out here.

Are you and Jalan McClendon friends?
Oh yea, that's my boy. He looks out... everyday we text each other when we wake up to make sure everybody makes it out here on time.  We look out for each other because one of us has to lead this team. We know that.

What do you do well?
I'm good with people... I think. I'm good with making friends, making people... bringing them along.

I'm good at just playing, balling out. When you see someone else ball you're going to want to ball also... you want to match their energy level

When you were told you'd wear No. 16, what did you feel?
That's some big shoes to fill. I was ready for it, but in my mind, I knew I had to bring it.  I had no choice. They're expecting big things.

How is your knee?
It's real good.
