No. 13 NC State baseball clinched its series against Notre Dame with a 16-6 victory in eight innings Sunday at Doak Field at Dail Park.
The Wolfpack (16-6, 3-3 ACC) fell into a 5-0 hole before scoring five in the third to tie. NC State took a 6-5 lead in the fourth. Notre Dame (8-11, 1-5) tied it 6-6 in the fifth. The Pack poured on two runs in the fifth and sixth, then six more in the seventh, before a predetermined travel curfew kicked in during the eighth to shorten the contest by an inning, setting the final 16-6.
NC State stole six bases on Sunday, a season high by three. Every Wolfpack batter contributed at least one hit on the way to a season high 17.
Stephen Pitarra set a career high in a 4-for-5 day with four runs, two RBIs, two doubles, and a stolen base. Preston Palmeiro drove in four, two shy of tying his career high.
Josh McLain scored three times in a 2-for-4 outing with an RBI, a walk, his third triple of the year, and seventh stolen base. Andrew Knizner drove in a pair and scored twice. Xavier LeGrant drew the start at third and scored twice with a double.
Brock Deatherage doubled and drove in a pair, scoring once and walking once. Chance Shepard swiped a bag and provided the Pack’s first two hits in a 2-for-5 performance with a run and an RBI. Evan Mendoza scored twice and drove in one with two walks. Shane Shepard stole a base and drove in a run. Garrett Suggs went 1-for-1 as his defensive replacement in left.
Wolfpack starter Johnny Piedmonte left in the third after five unearned runs. Ryan Williamson (4-0) scored the win on five innings, allowing one earned on four hits and four walks, punching out seven. Austin Staley struck out the side in the eighth to end it.
