Garner (NC) defensive lineman Matthew Butler has become somewhat of a celebrity as a high school football recruit. He might not be ranked at the level of some of the most famous names from his recruiting class but Butler has amassed a scholarship offer list that many would love.
North Carolina and Wake Forest have offered from Butler's home state. Maryland, Purdue and Penn State have all offered from the Big Ten and other ACC schools to have offered are Pittsburgh and Virginia Tech.
Over time Matthew has gradually learned more about all of those schools although he is still more familiar with some than others. But one school that he has promised to keep in mind is NC State. The Wolfpack offered before any of those others and Butler has not forgotten that.
He has visited NC State four times as a recruit the last time was recently. Butler did not publicize his NC State visit in advance because he did not want to field questions about it before it took place.
"It was a real good visit. I got to see how they practice and their energy and how they scrimmage and it was enjoyable. I've been up there quite a few times but this time was different because it was practice. Usually I've been there for a game or a Junior Day but this time was different. I got to talk to some players and not necessarily just the coaches.
"It's usually me and Nyheim Hines because we were teammates. Or Bryce Dixon. Just because I know them. When we talk they don't necessarily tell me to come to State. We're just talking."
Hines and Dixon both talked to Butler on this visit and he saw everyone in a competitive environment that is different than the more controlled visit during other times.
"Mostly Coach Nielsen and Coach Doeren were just kind of talking to me. I had a good visit because it was different."
Speaking of visits Butler's stop over in Raleigh was not exactly an isolated event. Butler was at Duke and North Carolina not too much before he visited State. After that he wants to make sure he visits Virginia and Virginia Tech.
"I always enjoy my Duke visits. Both Duke, UNC and NC State are going to be in my top schools and I do plan on cutting my list. When I do cut my list those three will be in there. It's just a different situation at UNC than at Duke and NC State. They're still going to make my tops list but UNC has a real big roster. They have plenty of people on the roster. It's not a matter of competition, it's just a matter of them having too many people on the roster, whether I could have the ability to have a role my freshman year. We'll have to wait and see, but I think it's about scholarship numbers."
