2018 Virginia Beach (VA) Bayside WR Armani Chatman didn't visit NC State under the impression that an offer would be waiting for him when he arrived. That made the offer on the visit that much more a cause for celebration.
It's also good news for NC State that Chatman was planning to visit regardless of whether an offer was coming. In fact Chatman said after visiting NC State that he did not expect the offer. It wasn't even thought of as something that may or may not happen.
Chatman (6-0, 180) visited NC State two weekends ago for the first time and decided to visit because the coaching staff was talking to him and he wanted to see how reality matched their hype. George Barlow had been planting seeds in Chatman's mind for a little while and that got him on campus.
"He told me they really want me there and they offered over the weekend or the weekend I was there. I really didn't think they were going to offer so I was pretty excited. The head coach offered me. He was just like hey, you've got an offer. He told me he liked my film and he liked the way I made a name for myself and stood out, so he wanted to offer me a scholarship."
The offer comes at a good time because Chatman has not formed a solid idea of what schools he likes more than others. As he thinks about his future he will do so knowing that NC State has offered and that could shape his plans for making visits at later dates.
He has visited Virginia Tech four times already and was there in Blacksburg after his trip to NC State.
Chatman may know more about Virginia Tech than any of the other schools recruiting him but he is not tipping his hand if he likes them more than others. He also said that NC State's coaches did a lot to impress him with the way they interacted with him and other players visiting that day.
"The coaches were interactive so I liked them. I liked the way they practiced. Everything was on schedule."
Before NC State's offer Chatman was saying that Virginia Tech, West Virginia and Penn State were the schools that had been recruiting him the hardest.
