Merchant Planning To Camp At NC State

Kings Mountain (NC) wide receiver Jake Merchant is hitting the camp circuit this summer in the hopes of landing his first offer.

2017 Kings Mountain (NC) athlete Jake Merchant is still looking for his first offer but he's planning an extensive tour of camps this summer in the hopes of doing just that.

Merchant (6-1, 180 pounds) can play receiver or defensive back. It was his exploits on defense that led to all-area first team honors in 2015. He finished off his junior season with 55 tackles, eight interceptions, one sack, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

Pack Pride caught up with Merchant to get the latest on his recruiting.

"Right now I'm just working out hard trying to get an offer. I'm working out with my team. Lately I went on a visit to Western Carolina and Gardner-Webb. I know coach Uremovich was at State and he went up to Northern Illinois and he's been talking to me a little bit. Lately it's just been a lot of talk with different schools and coaches."

Merchant camped at State last summer and it's a program he has quite a bit of interest in.

"I haven't had a lot of contact with State but coach Doeren, he's been talking to me some on email just telling me what's going on with the team lately. State's a really good school. I talked to my parents about it and they're really excited about NC State and like it  a lot. They're a unique program and I like a lot of stuff there- passing the ball, with Brissett, I really liked what I saw."

As for those all-important camps, Merchant says his summer schedule is full.

"I plan to go to NC State, Wake Forest, East Carolina, Gardner-Webb, Coastal Carolina and schools that are close by."

Merchant said he does not have any favorites at the current time.
