NC State Outlasts Navy, 13-8

RALEIGH, N.C. - No. 17 NC State baseball won 13-8 against Navy on Friday night in the Raleigh Regional at Doak Field at Dail Park in the Wolfpack's NCAA Tournament opener.

The Pack (36-20) broke a scoreless tie in the bottom fourth following a leadoff double from Brock Deatherage. Andrew Knizner scored him on the next pitch with a single up the middle. NC State added four more in the fifth thanks in part to homers from Knizner and Preston Palmeiro. With two outs, lightning delayed the game for three hours and eight minutes.

When play resumed at 11:50, Brett Kinneman made it back-to-back homers on a solo shot to right. Josh McLain parked a two-run shot to left, the inning's fourth home run, to put the Pack ahead 8-0. Navy (42-15-1) responded with five runs in the seventh, matched by NC State in the bottom half. Three more Midshipmen scored in the eighth to set the final 13-8.

NC State tied a season-high set in the second game of the season against Coastal Carolina with five home runs on the night. Entering the contest, Navy pitching had only allowed 15. Chance Shepard's grand slam in the seventh marked his 14th bomb of the year and second with the bases loaded.

Every Wolfpack batter recorded a hit, and eight scored at least one run. Evan Mendoza went 3-for-4 with a walk, the lone hitter not to cross home plate. Brock Deatherage went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs, a double, and his 14th stolen base. Knizner finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs, two runs, and his fifth longball of the year. Stephen Pitarra doubled in a 1-for-4 outing with two runs. Joe Dunand contributed a single, a run, an RBI, and drew a walk.

Wolfpack starter Brian Brown left after 4 1/3 innings of shutout ball, scattering four hits and two walks with one punchout. Austin Staley (3-1) recorded the win on two innings of relief work, allowing two earned on one hit and one walk with one strikeout. Chris Williams faced the next five batters. Evan Brabrand faced four. Travis Orwig closed the door with one earned on three hits and a walk in two innings, striking out four.
