Jackson (GA) linebacker Jeffery Burley holds double digit offers including NC State, Mississippi State, Wake Forest, Minnesota and Louisville.
He is a priority for the Wolfpack coaches but despite having an offer from State and nothing to prove, Burley decided to work out at State’s camp during a recent stop in Raleigh. So why the decision to work even with an NC State offer?
“It’s always great to work. You’ve got to love to work. To play football you’ve got to love to run, love to hit and put the work in.”
Burley definitely didn’t do anything to hurt his standing with the Wolfpack coaches as he was a standout in drills after measuring 6-2, 208 pounds and running a 4.63-second 40-yard dash and 4.3-second shuttle.
So what did Burley think of NC State?
“I actually loved it. I got to talk to the head coach and the defensive coordinator. I love the defense they’re going to run and what they’re trying to do. The defense they run is the same defense we run so I really love that.
“My mom and dad came with me to State. They loved it. From when we walked in and they saw the wolves, they loved it.”
Wolfpack defensive coordinator Dave Huxtable has been slowed by a leg injury but that hasn’t slowed him down at camp and it was something Burley took notice of.
“I love his (coach Huxtable’s) energy and I love the way he coaches even in the state he’s in and I love the way he’s coaching. He’s still there and he’s still coaching you up on the little things.”
Burley recently tweeted out a top five but has made some adjustments to that list.
“My top five has changed up. My top five right now would be Mississippi State, Minnesota, NC State, Wake Forest and Central Florida.
“I’m making a trip to Minnesota on July 26, a trip to LSU (in July) and so far that’s about it.”
As for a timeline, Burley plans to make a decision in the next couple of months and then opes to enroll early.
“I want to get the recruiting process over before my senior season so I can have the best season ever.
“I plan to enroll early. That’s what my dad wants me to do. That’s what my mom wants me to do. I honestly don’t want to do that but for them I’ll make the exception and enroll early.”
So out of his top five, has anyone risen above the others and exactly what will he be looking for when he makes that early commitment?
“If I had to put a team at the top it would be Mississippi State, NC State and Wake Forest. I would have to put those three together if I had a number one spot.
“I’m going to spend a lot of time with all the schools that have offered me. It’s just going to have to be one of those instinct things.”
