NAME: Markell Johnson
HOMETOWN: Cleveland (OH)
HIGH SCHOOL: East Technical High School
RANK: ****/No. 66 Overall
NOTES: NC State added a major piece last week when four-star point guard Markell Johnson signed with the Wolfpack. According to his head coach, Brett Moore, NC State is adding an impact player in Johnson.
"He's dynamic," said Moore. "He's a lot like Russell Westbrook in skillset and how he plays. Markell is an elite athlete, but he can also make things happen from a skill standpoint.
"For me, he was one of the most coachable kids I've ever had for him to be that talented. He can impact with his scoring, his defense, and his passing. Markell does a lot of things really, really well."
Johnson averaged 31.6 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 3.5 steals for East Tech last season, as he led the Scarabs to three straight Senate League championships.
At 6-foot-1 and 170 pounds, Johnson is a dynamic athlete who can impact the game in a variety of ways. This spring he played with King James Shooting Stars in the Nike EYBL, and he was one of the circuit's most productive players. Johnson averaged 18.2 points and 5.9 rebounds, and he ranked sixth in assists (4.9 apg) and third in steals (2.2 spg). He shot 49.4% from the field and 34.8% from 3-point range.
"What stands out the most about Johnson is his athleticism," said Scout.com National Recruiting Director Evan Daniels. "He's fast, a high flyer and a guy that has potential to be a lockdown guy on defender. He'll need to improve his long-range shooting some, but he has some physical gifts at the guard spot that not many can compete with."
"Markell is a highly athletic point guard who loves to get into the lane and make plays with his dynamic first step," added Scout.com National Recruiting Analyst Brian Snow. "He doesn't have the best feel or IQ, but he puts so much pressure on the defense with his athleticism and toughness that he is tough to deal with. Also he projects to be an excellent defender once he focuses more on that end."
Johnson held offers from programs like NC State, Ohio State, Xavier, Washington, West Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Texas A&M among others, prior to signing with the Wolfpack.
