2017 wing Justin Smith has a long list of suitors, with offers ranging from Illinois and Florida State to Wake Forest and NC State. He recently participated in the NBPA Top 100 camp where he was able to showcase his talent.
"It [was] a great experience," said Smith. "I [was] excited to be able to learn from all these NBA players and ex-NBA players, all of these NBA coaches."
One school expected to be in the mix is Illinois, as he has strong ties to the program.
"Both of my parents went to U of I," said Smith. "My dad ran track at U of I, and my mom was a regular student. They met there.
"They started recruiting me early, but they made it clear to me that this was my decision. They are going to guide me in the right direction. Whether it's at Illinois or not, they'll be happy with my decision because it's my decision."
Another school expressing interest is Indiana. What does he think of the Hoosiers?
"We just continue conversations with them telling me how much they want me to come up there," Smith said of Indiana. "They want me to visit again. I may do that, I need to see how the schedule works out."
NC State offered Smith back in the spring and remain involved.
"I actually just talked to coach Pierre," Smith said. "I know a little bit about them. They produce good wing players out of there, and they have a winning tradition so I look forward to learning. I don’t know too much, but I looking forward to learning more them."
Because offers continue to roll in, Smith has yet to narrow his list, as he plans to do so later this month.
"I'm open," he said. "I may narrow down in July or mid-July... just to start closing it out.
Does he have a timeframe for making a decision?
"November... I don’t want this dragging out," Smith said. "But, I envision myself probably taking all five [official visits]."
