Samuels To Wear No. 1 Jersey

RALEIGH, N.C. - For the past three seasons, a leader on the Wolfpack football team has been chosen to wear jersey No. 1. Head coach Dave Doeren asked his 2016 Leadership Council to recommend the teammate who they felt most deserved the honor, and that group chose junior tight end/fullback Jaylen Samuels.

For the past three seasons, a leader on the Wolfpack football team has been chosen to wear jersey No. 1.  Head coach Dave Doeren asked his 2016 Leadership Council to recommend the teammate who they felt most deserved the honor, and that group chose junior tight end/fullback Jaylen Samuels.

Samuels, a first-team All-ACC performer last season, had more receptions than any tight end nationally in 2015. The native of Charlotte ranks 15th in school history with 18 career touchdowns and his 16 scores a year ago ranked as the third-best single season mark in school history.

"JaySam shows up every day with the same work ethic, the same attitude and the same effort and he is an excellent leader for our team," said Doeren.  "I'm proud that his teammates chose to honor him in this way."

Last season, senior safety Hakim Jones wore No. 1, while safety Jarvis Byrd, who had come back from three torn ACLs to play his senior campaign, wore the jersey in 2014.
