Smith Has Plenty Of Options

Jacksonville (FL) Trinity Christian Academy wideout Derrick Smith is probably one of the 2017 recruits the NC State coaching staff wants more than any other. The talented wide receiver has a lot of big offers and he counts the Pack's as one of them.

This week Smith said five schools are standing out above the others on his list. In no order of significant Smith said Southern California, Miami, UCLA, Virginia Tech and NC State are the schools that rate the highest on his list.

Smith (6-2, 190) likes little things about each of those schools. But the big thing that he likes about all of them is that they all offer the ability for him to play early - at least as he sees it.

"I'm trying to go where I can play."

Smith went on a tour of colleges this summer and that's when he visited some of those schools.

"That's when I stopped by NC State. I went to Notre Dame, Alabama, North Carolina and Duke. I went to a good amount of colleges. Then after that I went to USC and UCLA. This weekend I'm going to Miami. I should be going to NC State again soon."

In the case of most of those schools Smith said things were as he expected them to be. But he said NC State exceeded his expectations. That might have been due in part to underestimating the school, but more than that it was the presentation that was just that impressive.

"Oh it was nice. It was real nice. Really more than I expected. I didn't really expect it to actually look like that. The football facility was nice and the campus was nice. Everything was nice. It was more than I expected."

Smith did not say his list is permanently fixed but he did say that he has "five schools that I'm considering" and so made it seem like it was more than just a top five drawn up quickly.
