Smith Breaks Down His Decision

Orlando (FL) Dr. Phillips linebacker Nick Smith talks about his decision to commit to NC State.

Orlando (FL) Dr. Phillips linebacker Nick Smith made a trip to NC State back in June and that planted the seeds for a potential future in Raleigh for the senior linebacker.

Smith needed only to return with his mother to make sure State was the place for him and that only reinforced his feelings about the Wolfpack. This past Friday Smith committed to NC State.

“I came up to NC State on June 19 and I really liked the vibe I got. I talked to coach Doeren and I just wanted to come a second time to make sure I was comfortable being here, my mom was comfortable with me being here and just coming back up here- I felt like today was the day to make my decision.”

NC State defensive coordinator Dave Huxtable is well known in the Orlando area and his relationship with Smith was key in his decision. Smith also liked the fact that he could potentially compete for snaps as a freshman.

“I really had a great relationship with coach Huxtable and coach Doeren. When I came up they talked about a lot of things. They talked about me playing as a freshman, especially since I’ll be up under two seniors. I can go up under their wing and they can teach me a lot and I’m going to do my best to bring a championship to NC State.”

Smith told Pack Pride that the coaches had no idea a decision was imminent prior to the trip to Raleigh. However, the staff was ecstatic when they learned the news.

“The coaches didn’t know I was going to commit. Coach Huxtable, that was probably the hardest hug I’ve ever had. Coach Huxtable almost had a heart attack, and I wanted to make sure his knee was alright. I talked to coach Doeren and a lot of the other coaches and they were just happy to have me.”

In addition to NC State, Smith also considered UNC, Nebraska, Arizona, Syracuse and Louisville.

He is rated a three-star prospect and the No. 97 outside linebacker in the nation by Scout.com.
