NC State cross country runner Elijah Moskowitz has made headlines after photos of him participating in the NCAA Cross Country Championships went viral.
This photo, taken by Runners World photographer Michael Scott, shows Moskowitz completin the race after falling and being kicked in the face.
Moskowitz, a sophomore, was reportedly in the lead group when a fall by a lead runner led to him falling as well after about 3K of the ten-kilometer race.
“I basically face-planted on the ground, then the whole pack was trying to jump over me,” Moskowitz told Runners World. “Someone’s foot just caught my face and kicked me pretty hard in the face. Then I just curled up in a ball and waited for everybody to jump over me.”
That didn't stop him from completing the race.
“I thought that if I passed out somebody would take care of me, so I might as well just do as much as I can,” he added. “I kept having to spit [blood] out and I vaguely remember running by people who were saying, ‘Oh my god!’ I thought, ‘Is it that bad?’”
Moskowitz finished 243rd, which wasn't what he had hoped for, but he completed the race with a likely broken nose and potentially a concussion.
