Gottfried: "That Was A Stinker"

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- NC State head coach Mark Gottfried met with the media after the loss to North Carolina.

Opening Statement:
For me, I thought in the first half, North Carolina was terrific.  Roy had them ready to play, they made every shot, and it was the perfect storm. They were really good, and we were as bad as you could possibly be.

I don't know if I've had a team shoot as many airballs, miss foul shots, and turn the ball over like we did.  At the end of the day, it was them playing phenomenally well and us playing very poorly.

We'll move on from this game and get ready to play on Wednesday, which you have to do in this league. We all watched it, and that was a stinker on our part.

When you have a lopsided lost like this, are you swayed at all about getting in stride?
Not one bit. My team is the same team that just played against Virginia Tech, four or five days ago.  It happens. Sometimes when you catch a team on a certain day and they are really good and you're really bad, things happen.

In this conference, you have to make sure you don't let a loss linger into the next game or let a big win linger into the next game. We have to make sure we're ready to play next week. We have to put this one behind us. We were bad. We acknowledge it, they were terrific. It's time to move on to the next game.

Did the postponement have an impact?
Nope, not one bit. Nope, being postponed had nothing to do with how we played.

Based on this, do you feel it's really important to do well at Boston College?
We have 18 opportunities and we have to be ready to play every single night. We could have come over here and won. We could have come over here and lost by 11. At the end of the day, it's one loss. This one hurts because we were so bad, but at the end of the day, that's what it is.

We'll make sure our team is ready to play in the next game.

Do you think your team was ready to play in the rivalry game?
I think they were. They started out so well, and we started out so poorly. We turned the ball over, rushed offensively, we were in a hurry, and all of a sudden it goes from six to ten to 15... it's like an avalanche trying to stop it.

We didn't have enough poise, we didn't execute early on.

Overall, I look at our first half and I don't know that we could have played worst. I don't know that I've had a team shoot as many airballs... we were bad. I was bad. We were all bad. Bad day, but the sun will come up tomorrow and we'll get ready to play on the road on Wednesday.

How many of the turnovers were a product of UNC's defense or disjointed offense?
I don't know a number. A lot probably had to do with both. We were impatient, made long, lazy, passes, and weren't strong with the ball. Then they were good... you have to give credit. They were terrific.

A lot of your kids are young, do you think they will embrace the 1-of-18 and shrug this off?
We'll find out, but I've said it many times to them... we beat a ranked opponent the other day and it only counts as one win. It doesn't give us three wins, it's only one.

We have a lot left to play. We'll get this one out of us quick.

Dennis didn't seem to be in a groove. Are some of these games... teams have targets on him.
Everybody is fired up to play him. He had the first foul, then he got the second one in the break, and I didn't like his third one. I didn't think that was a foul, and obviously at that point he's really behind the eight-ball with three fouls in the first half. He didn't get in the flow.

He's a terrific player. He's a young guy learning a lot and I don't have any doubt that he'll bounceback and be ready to play.

Was there anything you felt your team did that you liked?
Nope. We were bad. We were really, really bad.
